WHAT IS OPTOMETRY AND OPTOMETRIST

According to World Council of Optometry (WCO) It is a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated, and regulated (licensed/registered), and optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis, and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.”

According to The National Commission For Allied And Healthcare Professional Act-India, Optometrist are Ophthalmic sciences professionals who studies eye, related ailments and specialises in the management of disorders of eye and visual system, limited in scope and complexity as performed by a medical doctor having Optometrists with a minimum of four years of baccalaureate degree.
According to Ministry of health and family welfare, India
1. Graduate degree in optometry obtained after the completion of a full time course of 4 years(baccalaureate) which includes supervised clinical training from any university recognized by the University Grants Commission established under the University Grants Commission Act 1956; or
2. Post graduate degree in optometry after completion of a full time course of two years and /or PhD in the same.

Optometrists are responsible for the prescription of spectacles & contact lenses. The course aims to produce professionally competent optometrists serving as primary eye care health practitioners.

 

Program Objectives–

  • Those who choose this stream are going to study about eye care, eye equipment, Optometry Technology, equipment, Critical Care, squint management, vision anomalies management, etc.
  • Those who get their placement will be known as Optometrist, Consultant Optometrist, contact lens specialist, vision specialist.
  • This Program will create a great source of manpower that can aid in our health sector especially in Vision care,eye health programs,Eye Emergency.
  • Optometrist provide safe & quality patient eye care by using their technical & critical thinking
  • This Program will give students knowledge of basic Science like Ocular Anatomy, Ocular Physiology, Contact lens, Binocular vision, Low vision, Sports Vision, occupational Optometry Public health, etc.

Eligibility Criteria

2 years of Diploma in Optom after 10th, having atleast 50% marks from a recognized board or equivalent.

M. Optometry

Course Overview

Eligibility Criteria

Pass with 50% aggregate marks in B.Optometry or equivalent from a recognized university

Program Objectives

  • Perform vision tests and analyze results
  • Diagnose sight problems, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, and eye diseases, such as glaucoma
  • Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other visual aids, and if state law permits, medications
  • Perform minor surgical procedures to correct or treat visual or eye health issues
  • Provide treatments such as vision therapy or low-vision rehabilitation
  • Provide pre- and postoperative care to patients undergoing eye surgery—for example, examining a patient’s eyes the day after surgery
  • Evaluate patients for the presence of other diseases and conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, and refer patients to other healthcare providers as needed
  • Promote eye and general health by counseling patients
